2 Corinthians 3:17 (KJV) – Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
“I freed a thousand slaves I could have freed a thousand more if only they knew they were slaves.” – Harriet Tubman
LIBERTY is a big word. In Christ Jesus we have liberty. Liberty is independence, release and deliverance. It is not an empowerment, as empowering requires assistance. Liberty is a pure freedom, complete release that no longer needs guidance or empowerment.
Galatians 5:1 (KJV) – Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
Liberty that is given to us by God is liberty from:
- The bondage to sin: Romans 8:1-2 (KJV)
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
- The rule of the Law of Moses: Galatians 3:23-25 (KJV)
23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.
24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
- The traditions of men: Colossians 2:20-23 (MEV)
20 Therefore, if you died with Christ to the elementary principles of the world, why, as if you were living in the world, do you subject yourself to legalistic rules? 21 “Do not touch! Do not taste! Do not handle!” 22 These all are to perish with use and are aligned with the commandments and doctrines of men. 23 These things have indeed a show of wisdom in self-imposed worship and humility and neglecting of the body, but are worthless against the indulgence of the flesh.
- The works of the flesh: Galatians 5:17-18 (KJV)
17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
We have liberty when we receive Jesus into hearts and live for the will of the Father in Heaven. We must always walk in Spirit. We must pray continually and as we grow in the Grace of the Lord. Our Spiritual walk becomes more natural and more enjoyable. The wisdom gained from living in fear of God alone awakens our spirit to the works of the flesh.
Galatians 5:19-21 (KJV)
19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
The liberty from God does not empower us to fulfill the lust of the flesh, nor does it legalize those things that are wrong. After being freed from the bondage of sin, we are led by the spirit to choose life.
Galatians 6:8 (KJV) – For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
